Few structures are as closely connected with the identity of London as Tower Bridge.

Standing across the River Thames for more than 130 years, it is instantly recognisable around the world. But behind its Victorian Gothic towers is a fascinating story of engineering, architecture and craftsmanship.

By the late 19th century, London’s East End was expanding rapidly and desperately needed another river crossing. There was one major problem: the new bridge could not block the busy shipping route into the Pool of London, then one of the most important parts of the Port of London.

The answer was an extraordinary piece of Victorian engineering.

Tower Bridge was designed as a combination of a bascule and suspension bridge. Its two enormous central sections could be raised, allowing tall ships to continue along the Thames while providing a permanent road connection between the two sides of the river.

Architect Sir Horace Jones created the bridge’s distinctive appearance, using Victorian Gothic architecture to ensure that the new structure complemented the nearby Tower of London. Engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry transformed that architectural vision into a functioning piece of infrastructure.

And what visitors see from the outside tells only part of the story.

Behind the stone and decorative façades sits an enormous steel structure. When Tower Bridge first opened, its huge bascules were operated using steam-powered hydraulic machinery — remarkably advanced technology for the 1890s.

The original steam system was eventually replaced by a modern electro-hydraulic system, but the fundamental principle behind the bridge remains much the same.

More than a century after it opened, Tower Bridge still carries traffic across the Thames and still opens for passing vessels.

For me, that is what makes buildings and structures like Tower Bridge so interesting. Great architecture is not simply about appearance. It is about solving problems, understanding materials and combining design with engineering and skilled craftsmanship.

Tower Bridge did all of that more than 130 years ago — and it is still doing its job today.
