Located in the heart of Piazza San Marco, Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale) is one of the finest examples of Venetian Gothic architecture and one of Italy’s most iconic historic landmarks.
Construction of the current palace began in 1340, replacing earlier buildings that had occupied the site. The design is widely associated with Filippo Calendario, one of the leading architects and sculptors of medieval Venice, while many skilled craftsmen contributed to its expansion over the following centuries.
For almost 1,000 years, the palace served as the residence of the Doge of Venice, as well as the seat of the Venetian government, law courts and administration of one of Europe’s most powerful maritime republics.
One of its most fascinating features is the famous Bridge of Sighs, which connects the palace to the historic prison. According to legend, prisoners crossing the bridge would take their final glimpse of beautiful Venice through its small windows before beginning their imprisonment—giving the bridge its unforgettable name.
Today, Doge’s Palace welcomes millions of visitors each year and continues to inspire architects, designers and builders with its remarkable craftsmanship, elegant proportions and timeless beauty.
