The extraordinary Sky Pool at Embassy Gardens in Battersea, London, is one of the most remarkable modern engineering and architectural achievements in the world. Suspended approximately 35 metres (115 ft) above the streets of London, this transparent acrylic swimming pool connects two luxury residential buildings, creating the incredible sensation of swimming in the sky.
Officially opened in 2021 as part of the Embassy Gardens and Nine Elms regeneration project, the Sky Pool was developed by Ballymore in collaboration with EcoWorld Ballymore. The project was designed by HAL Architects together with internationally recognised structural engineers Eckersley O’Callaghan, specialists known for pushing the boundaries of structural glass and acrylic engineering.
The floating section of the pool stretches around 14 metres between the buildings and was manufactured using massive acrylic panels approximately 20 cm thick. Before being filled with water, the structure itself weighs around 50 tonnes. The engineering challenge attracted worldwide attention and quickly turned the Sky Pool into one of London’s most photographed modern architectural landmarks.
Embassy Gardens forms part of the wider regeneration of the Nine Elms and Battersea district, an area transformed over the last decade from industrial riverside land into one of London’s most ambitious luxury residential and commercial developments. Located close to the iconic Battersea Power Station redevelopment and the new US Embassy, the Sky Pool represents the city’s continuing evolution through bold architecture, engineering innovation and contemporary urban design.
